I’m glad to annunce that Rapache 0.7 is in Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex release.

FFe Bug #283770 acked by Scott Kitterman (Motu Release team) and uploaded by myself is up, go to try it!

Major points for this release are:

Reworked UI
The edges of the user interface has been rounded a little.

• most notably: the “Virtualhost Editor” window is very polished and has not anymore horizontal tabs.

• Virtualhost and Module editors have a link to the respective online documentation. This is something very simple to implement, yet much needed.

Plugins for more advanced capabilities
Rapache enjoys now a handful plugins to let you perform common tasks easily:

• the advanced tab lets you configure less often needed things like the server admin e-mail, the custom error log location (along with the error log level), enable or disable apache’s directory listing and to setup your own default documents policy.

• the basic security plugin it’s basically an interface to the basic_auth module of Apache. This is simple but incredibly handy, you can quickly set up an access list (namely creating users and assigning a password to them) to any virtualhost. Useful for disabling or enabling access to any virtualhost with a click or to restrict the access to a given site without having to resort to any server-side technology other than Apache.

• SSL We provide a Gui to quickly set-up an https:// enabled Virtualhost. Certificate Request creation is provided and even certificates self signing is available. It takes 5-6 clicks to be in business with Apache+SSL

• We now store last 20 backups of every virtualhost you edit within Rapache. That means that if something goes wrong, you can quickly restore the previous version.
• You can also now edit the virtualhosts source at hand and save it directly from Rapache. You will enjoy syntax highlighting as you deserve (hey, everyone deserves syntax highlighting).

Apache status

• Rapache now shows Apache’s status changing its own icon color. So you can see at a glance if Apache is up or not.

• We put some new item in the menu bar to allow users to start/stop/restart Apache.

• The new “Log Files” tab allows the user to quickly browse the logs.

I’m pleased to annunce that people.ubuntu.com will be free for Ubuntu Members, and not only Canonical people.

In recent days after having discussed the matter with Matt Zimmerman (Ubuntu Technical Board), I was advised to raise the issue directly to Mark Shuttleworth and James Troupt.

My first email:

Hello Mark, Hello James.

I talked with Matt Zimmerman (and him say to me that the right road is
ask to you) about the possibility to open access from people.ubuntu.com
to ubuntu-dev members [1]; I talked to Matt about the last decision [2],
but i think that the decision is surmountable via mod_security, SELinux
(or grsecurity) and ssh pubblic key authorization for login.

Debian use people.debian.org/~${id}, gentoo too (i worked in gentoo
development and we used same method).

Its very important give the possibility to all ubuntu developers to use
this space for add ubuntu stuff and tools. For example: UTU [3], ubuntu
docs, debdiffs, dev scripts, google-custom (to optimize the search
results) and other stuff.

I think that is very important give this possibility to all ubuntu
developers and not only Canonical people.

After it, very fast reply:

James, Matt and I discussed this and agreed:

 - it's inappropriate to have something called "people.ubuntu.com" which is
   only accessible to Canonical folks
 - we can safely offer SFTP-based web page hosting for ubuntu members, using
   existing LP-hosted SSH key access

So, James will take responsibility for bringing up this capability for Ubuntu members,
and figure out how to grandfather the existing Canonical folks' content.

Hey people, rapache 0.6 is finally in Universe!

Thanks to Steve Langasek for the NEW package upload.

For those who doesn’t know Rapache (ra-pa-che), n. 1. a python + GTK tool that uses the SSH protocol (one day, still local right now) to manage and configure apache2 and all of its modules. GPL`d, Its goal is to provide the user with a simple interface to facilitate the work to those who want to set up a web-server in a few clicks. 2. Rapacious bird (italian: rapace).

Same rapache version is available for Ubuntu Hardy Heron via Rapache-Developers PPA.

For install it (on Ubuntu Hardy Heron) please add this repository in /etc/apt/sources.lists:
