Rapache 0.2-1 alpha packaged
I am pleased to announce that rapache 0.2-1 alpha is avaiable on Rapache-developers PPA for Ubuntu hardy.
Rapache (ra-pa-che), n. 1. a python + GTK tool that uses the SSH protocol (one day, still local right now) to manage and configure apache2 and all of its modules. GPL`d, Its goal is to provide the user with a simple interface to facilitate the work to those who want to set up a web-server in a few clicks. 2. Rapacious bird (italian: rapace)
For try it please add this repository in /etc/apt/sources.lists:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/rapache-devel/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/rapache-devel/ubuntu hardy main
Now update and install rapache
apt-get update
apt-get install rapache
Feel free to test it and report bug here.
NEWS:
I worked to write setup.py that will enable you to complete the installation (by rapache-stage0 branch) inside of your system with icon in the menu.
If you like this project please join rapache-user team in launchpad, open group that encloses the rapache community.
Next step?
add Apache modules enabling/disabling/modification for complete stage-0.

1) This is similar to redhat linux GUI apache configuration is it correct
2)webmin you can use this for all apache2 configuration
What more features you are going to add to your tool

@dave: I didn’t know of a red hat gui tool, could you point us an Url to it, so we can take a look ?
I think I really should to take the time to write a full blog post explaining the reasons behind rapache.
BTW, as far as I know, there aren’t any stable apache gui tool for debian systems.
Webmin surely works, but it’s web-based at first, is not easy to install and the interface is (imho) chaotic at least. Anyway, kudos to it’s author for producing such a great tool and for blogging useful tips.
Also should be noted that Suse too features an apache gui, which is sadly bound to yast. I don’t think it would work anyway, on a debian system, due to the way debian cuts the apache configuration files (but I could be wrong).
As for our roadmap, we’re going to build a very easy and intuitive gui first. Then build some advanced feature on it.

Hello. I really like this idea, if you can make it easy enough for people who mostly just want to do web development and maybe even at least hobby server admin locally against a remote server. That’s be really really nice.
I’m curious how you will handle the remote stuff though, mainly I am interested in how that will be setup. If I have a SSH account on a remote machine, I’m generally not going to have the edit rights for Apache directly from my normal login, nor should I have - security issue. On the other hand, www-data should not have remote login.
Of course, maybe the easiest is to simply add self to www-data and have config files 664 or something. If someone gets your account you’re toast anyways.
Idle curiosity, with no real ideas to contribute.
